Swimming pools are to be enjoyed by all, and in warm climates like experienced in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast, having a pool in your backyard can be a real blessing. But pools also need to be safe to protect the lives of young children - both your own, visitors, and those in the neighbourhood.

Although you would have had your pool fence and pool area checked for compliance by a safety inspector initially, is it still safe now? And are there any hazards around that should be taken care of?

The Pool Fence

The minimum height for the pool safety barriers has to be at least 1200mm. Is your pool fence still in pristine condition? If there is any damage then it needs to be repaired or it won't be compliant.

The Pool Gate

The gate is possibly the most vital part of the entire barrier and should always be kept in perfect working order. Does the latch shut securely each and every time? Are the hinges loose or starting to rust away? Is there any damage to the gate? These things should be checked regularly.

Boundary Fences

Boundary fences should also be a minimum of 1200mm in height with no climbable areas where children can gain a hand hold or a foothold.

Windows That Access The Pool Area

These either need to have security screens on them, or be limited to opening no wider than 100mm. If a window opens directly into the pool area and is not screened or limited, children can gain easy access to the pool.

Other Access Points

Are there any rocks or garden beds close to the pool fence, thus reducing the height of the safety barrier in that area? Also, any tree branches overhanging the fence that are climbable should be removed.

Pool Equipment

The area where the pump and filter are housed should be sealed off with a locked gate so small children cannot access the equipment.

Pool Chemicals

Are these stored in a safe place away from young children? Many pool chemicals are highly toxic. Things like:

• Chlorine
• Acid
• Algaecides
• Stain Removers
• Pool Shock
• Cleaning Agents For Equipment

All of these chemicals present a danger to young children and should be kept locked away.
